Home from Arizona. We are home.
Our last week will be in the Sonoran desert, working with No More Deaths.
Two full weeks in Tucson, Arizona. We spent Friday on the Tohono o'odum reservation surrounded by the border patrol. We watched the border patrol catch two groups of migrants and we spent time at the border that splits the reservation. We talked with Ophelia about the complexities of dealing with the United States, Mexico, the border patrol, and tribal council.
Alas--the stomach flu has hit. Sherrie got it first and missed the Grand Canyon Adventure. But one by one, everyone has gotten it or is still getting it. Just a reminder that life does not always go as planned.
One week in Tucson already. We've seen migrants in shackles, worked around town, been questioned by the Border Patrol, and had some amazing group experiences. Check out our photos. We've been having connection problems, so our entries are not as timely as we'd like, but we'll get everything up there.
We are a group of students from the University of Michigan traveling to Nogales, Mexico to work with two organizations, No More Deaths and Border Links. During the first three weeks we will be working with the community of Nogales at La Casa, the Community Center, where we will hold workshops, entertain and provide meals for the children of the center. For the fourth week we will be in the Sonoran Desert where we will provide food, water and basic medical care to individuals in need. At least that's what we thought we were going to do. See the news area for the first big change in our plans.
Now we'll be spending time on the U.S. side of the border, working with Day Laborers and kids from a local charter school.
